Brandon BeltIf you were in Bruch Bochy’s position, you would probably feel just as spoiled as he does. For years, spring training for the San Francisco Giants’ manager was simply an opportunity to see if there was anyone he could work with and just hope the season didn’t turn out to be as average as the one before it. This year, with a World Series championship still coursing through his veins, everything’s changed. And not the least of that comes with the emergence of first baseman Brandon Belt.

Luis CastilloThe New York Mets cut dies with Luis Castillo on Friday, releasing him from their training camp while absorbing the remaining year of the four-year, $25 million contract he signed prior to the 2008 season. Constant knee injuries and an overall lack of effort have made the fans sour with Castillo, and both sides are probably happy to be rid of each other. The 34-year-old veteran now has a blank check when it comes to his own future.

Derek LoweThe Atlanta Braves announced that for the third consecutive season, they’ll give the ball to Derek Lowe on Opening Day. The Braves will travel from sunny Florida up to Washington to take on the Nationals in one of this year’s untraditional March 31 kickoff games. Even at the ripe age of 37, Lowe still has enough gas left in his tank for a 15th season as a major league pitcher. At least that’s what the Braves organization is hoping for.

Cam WardIt appears as though Cam Ward needs to be flawless. In his last two games, he was exactly that for all but 12 seconds, and it cost his team two points as a result. Ward stopped all 40 shots in a win against Buffalo on Tuesday, but his Carolina Hurricanes fell 3-1 to the Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. In that game, he stopped 16 of 19 shots, but was also utterly useless for a brief moment in the second period when he let in a pair of weak goals a dozen seconds apart.

Carmelo Anthony trade to the New York Knicks reviewDV and Chris take a look at the Carmelo Anthony trade to the New York Knicks and how it's panned out thus far. The Knicks are now 7-6 since the trade (NOTE: this podcast was recorded before the Knicks win versus the Memphis Grizzlies), while the Denver Nuggets are 9-2. DV argues that the Knicks gave up too much in Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler, and the prospect of Timofey Mozgov and while Chris agrees, to get a "superstar" like Anthony was or will be worth the price in order to possibly (hopefully) get another big name star and form the trendy Big Three of star NBA players ala the Miami Heat with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh. Either way, the one thing both DV and Chris can agree on is that the Knicks won't go far without playing defense. Download and listen here!

Joe MauerWhen the Minnesota Twins arrived in Florida in mid-February, they put a new spin on the purpose of the preseason. The point of Spring Training is to get back into shape after the winter, but for the Twins, it was an opportunity to recover from some serious injuries to key players. All of catcher Joe Mauer, first baseman Justin Morneau and closer Joe Nathan are back in action and look like they’ll be ready to play come Opening Day.

Roger Goodell and Sam Bradford at 2010 NFL DraftIt's being reported that the top NFL prospects for the 2011 NFL Draft are being told by the NFLPA (yeah, sure, they're decertified and not working as a group anymore) to not show up at next month's draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York. The union is suggesting that the draft prospects partake in another activity that it seems would be run by the union and would give a similar experience that being at the NFL Draft would give. Understand that in the battle between the owners and players, I consider the owners more in the wrong, but is the NFLPA serious?

Braden HoltbyWashington Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby was named NHL First Star for the week ending March 13. It was the first honor the young netminder has received in his short NHL career, and he couldn’t have been more deserving. Called into action on short notice, Holtby put up a 4-0-0 record on the week with a 1.05 goals against average and .965 save percentage. He beat Vancouver’s Daniel Sedin and Anaheim’s Corey Perry, who were named second and third stars.

James ReimerThe Toronto Maple Leafs are in the best position they’ve seen in years, and they’re still not in a playoff spot. They currently hold the 10th-seed in the Eastern Conference and realistically, are only chasing the Sabres, Rangers and Hurricanes. Maybe it’s because the Leafs haven’t won a Stanley Cup since 1967, or maybe it’s because the team hasn’t even made the playoffs since before the lockout, but fans in Toronto have been going nuts (more than usual) after every win lately. After Monday night’s loss, the Leafs are six back of the eight spot.

Chicago BlackHawks at the White HouseWinning the Stanley Cup can make a lot of good things happen for you. Your name gets inscribed on the championship trophy, you get to take that NHL hardware home with you to show off to family and friends, and you even get to travel to the White House to shake hands with the President. On Friday, the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks made their honorary visit to Washington, D.C. to do just that.
